After appearing on the debut compilation for the new Boys Noize concept label ONES AND ZEROS, ADAME DJ comes to Boysnoize Records to release his ROLÊ EP, the first Brazilian funk release for the stalwart label. ADAME DJ hails from Cachoeiro De Itapemirim in Espírito Santo and represents the more avant-garde, electronic music-oriented side of a genre that has exploded in recent years, not only in popularity but in distinct styles. Despite the short run time, the ROLÊ EP compresses an incredible amount of diversity in rhythms, textures, and samples into its four tracks, taking listeners and DJs alike on a sonic trip that’s full of surprises.
Opener “Movimento Na Favela,” featuring MC Rafa 22, kicks off with a 4/4 gabber kick and is quickly joined by bitcrushed snares and chopped vocals. The track remains sparse in elements, but punches hard with an absolutely nasty bass hit, making it the perfect tool for steering the mood into heavier territory.
“Techno 2” follows with MC Morena and MC Reizen on the mic, and as the title suggests, is as ready for Berlin clubs as it is for Brazil raves. With a sinister 303 line as its anchor, the track warps and shifts between funk rhythms, 4/4, and shuffled patterns, punctuated by micro-builds that keep raising the tension across its 2:30 runtime.
“Pokpok” is perhaps the most delirius of the tracks, mutating through a multi-genre maze with unexpected twists and turns. Looped and stuttering vocals from MC PR are accented by vicious donks and crunchy drums in a funk pattern, before the track switches to a mysterious vocoder melody with MC Thaizinha singing the topline. Like the great reveal of a magic trick, “Pokpok” suddenly drops into a deliciously dark disco house groove detourned with ring-modulated percussion before reprising its distorted opening. The dancefloor is left dizzy and ecstatic.
The EP closes with a massive heater, “Pagode Do Adame,” with MC DA FRANÇA and MC HENRY. Opening with a terrifying pitch-bending saw wave, aggressive rapping rides escalating chirps before a sample-chopped fake-out gives way to a raucously bouncy, shark attack drop. A second breakdown follows with haunting, cinematic atmosphere. With the help of the MCs, the track swells with such fury that the drop, despite its minimalism, might start a mosh-pit.
In an ever more open-format era, ADAME DJ’s ROLÊ EP is worthy of any party and every crate, ready for the moment to switch it up and turn it up.
