Starting with ISAIAH’s most recent release on the Boys Noize presents ONES and ZEROS compilation and going backwards, we stopped counting the number of tracks in the Amsterdam-based DJ and producer’s catalogue after tallying 50 originals, collaborations and remixes in just 18 months. This only partially explains why every techno DJ on earth has at least one ISAIAH track in their crate, however. The other reason? A practicing pianist since early childhood, ISAIAH “speaks” music with a fluency that allows high output at the highest quality, as if it were his mother tongue.
Having self-released most of his work, ISAIAH’s arrival on Boysnoize Records with his Dedication EP marks a special occasion. The four-track EP spans ISAIAH’s signature styles, from techno to hardgroove to jacking house. The EP begins with its titular track, an infectious hardgroove tool that immediately locks you in, with layered percussion loops riding a dizzy bassline accented by snapping snares. ISAIAH keeps the rhythm in the center channel while immersive atmospherics float across spatial stereo. It’s a mix tuned specifically for club systems, while the arrangement drives the dancefloor to a higher plane of energy.
The EP moves in a different direction with the tracks that follow. Everyone is familiar with disco house, but “disco techno,” as far as we can tell, has never existed… until now? ISAIAH’s “Stop the Tape and Hit Rewind” serves analogue funk over pumping, rattling drums. A screwed vocal sample adds a touch of Houston, but it’s the Chic violin stabs that get the mirror ball spinning.
“I Need You” offers a second house groove built on a techno chassis. Here, 909 claps stutter over a shuffling rhythm, as a woman’s echoing voice delivers some uplifting rave therapy. Classic and modern, with vintage drum machines and organic samples, situated somewhere between house and techno, both ”Stop the Tape and Hit Rewind” and “I Need You” are elastic transition tracks that work in any moment.
Closing the Dedication EP is “Get Yo Confidence Up,” a deliciously dark, jacking techno track that will set off even the most staid of crowds. The arrangement works like a tool, but hits like an anthem, retaining ISAIAH’s additive, hypnotic structure as sensual samples turn up the temperature. The beat chugs and rolls like a train over the skipping bassline, with its scattered claps and wiggling shakers giving dancers everything they desire. With genre boundaries increasingly blurring and expanding, ISAIAH’s Dedication EP provides an expert four-point foundation for DJs working in the “big tent” of techno. You may not be able to count all of ISAIAH’s tracks, but you can always count on them.
