Ten years have passed since PILO’s first release on Boysnoize Records, and the LA-native DJ and producer is marking the decade with an “X.” Rather than a crossroads or a crossing-out, the title of PILO’s X EP represents the collaboration behind each of the four tracks and the hybridized, genre-bending results. With his 10,000 hours of studio practice complete, PILO is taking full advantage of the current “anything goes” sentiment in club music by flexing the breadth of his experience. Label boss BOYS NOIZE joins PILO to kick down the X EP’s door with “PVSSY,” fusing aggressive electro with a sexed-up, femme 2 Live Crew call-and-response courtesy of DEEVIOUS. While the track is guaranteed to be a ubiquitous party anthem, it’s deceptively sparse - careful listening reveals the texture and masterful drum processing responsible for its massive scale, and there’s plenty more of this timbral experimentation to come. Featuring fellow Angeleno JOHN BRYARS, “DEVOTION” conjures broken industrial through a haunted radio in a game of BDSM-ASMR, with ominous voices teasing and withholding the treble to maddening effect. “DAY ONE” breaks the 160 BPM speed limit with a tribute to the late DEUCE HURT, whose vocals skitter over a ghettotech backbone as horn samples are crushed into sticky molasses. The titular closer brings recurring co-tweaker BASECK and gonzo virtuoso CONNOR MUSARRA together for an ensemble IDM opus with a live feel. Driven by an analogue melancholy, “X” has a story to tell - one of rhythm, time and melody, of collaboration, friendship and loss, and of a city where music serves as a connecting thread fluid enough to move through and around the alienating sprawl. Fortunately, PILO’s X EP is not the end of a decade long story, but the point of departure for what’s to come. BOYSNOIZE RECORDS touches down in DTLA March 25th for the release of PILO’s X EP, celebrating his 10th year of releases with the Berlin-based label. A tribute to both the city and the friendships of the last decade, the X EP will debut with an equally collective (and energetic) launch party.
